I thought I'd post a link here about Lt. Gen. Hal G. Moore, who died a few days ago, since he was the commander of US forces during the Battle of the Ia Drang Valley (only a Lt. Col. at the time). It's always quite sad, for me, whenever a soldier who participated in a historical battle passes away, because with them goes that bit of history that lived with them. But as long as we remember Ia Drang--the first major battle between US military forces and their North Vietnamese counterparts, fought in dense elephant grass--and the subsequent fighting at landing zones Albany and X-Ray, as US troops fought desperately to evacuate their wounded, then their stories and their legacies will live on.

It's probably really odd to think that 50 years after the Battle of Ia Drang ended, there's a small group of people still reenacting it (in a sense), and keeping that memory alive. RIP Hal G. Moore. We will remember you!

Indeed.

It's quite interesting to observe all the discussions these days on various conflicts the United States engages in around the globe. We rescue Europe in WWII. Then we are in Korea. Then we are in Vietnam (disaster). It goes on and on. The number of lives lost because of what? Why? Can anyone make any sense of it? We have people killing each other. Why?

Thanks for the information
It's always sad if contemporary witness with experience of life pass away from us.

I'm always interested in historical background of vietnam war. That's a reason why I love this game. They tried to make the game fit with the real situation and the terrain.

There's plenty of folks tacked the issue. Though I don't think anyone's ever linked it all together.

It’s a combination of game theory and behavioural economics / evolutionary psychology. Cognitive biases etc which work well in ancestral environments, but potentially disastrous with the scale of resource concentrations enabled by the dubious legal foundations of modern financial institutions combined with industrial weapons technology and political heritage.

The answer isn’t in the technicalities of warfare, or even human psychology. Both consequences of the evolution of human intelligence, language, and the primate imperative to claim territory and power.

Here’s some of the beset books that cover the issues. (Though none oriented to game theory – may need to check out Wikipedia on that one.)

Deadliest -

That was an interesting article. I will watch the movie when I get a chance. You are right about how strange it is that we continue to play this game that was developed with somewhat historically accurate maps - it is surrealistic, but as you mentioned, we are stuck in this time warp reenacting past battles over and over.
