BF1942 2.0

Hey everyone! I've been working on a long-term project that I'm calling BF1942 2.0.

The goal isn't to remake Battlefield 1942 or turn it into a completely different game. I want to preserve what makes BF1942 special—the maps, large battles, vehicles, infantry combat, classes, and overall feel—while improving and expanding the parts of the game that have aged.

A major focus is the AI. Rather than simply making bots more accurate or aggressive, the goal is to make them behave more like an organized army. That includes persistent squads with leaders, better squad movement and coordination, smarter use of vehicles, improved awareness of battlefield objectives, and eventually a commander system that works alongside BF1942's existing strategic AI.

So far, the project has already reached some important milestones: persistent bot squads and squad leaders are working in-game; squad membership can survive deaths, respawns, and entering/leaving vehicles; squad members can coordinate their movement; and friendly squad members/leaders can be visually distinguished in-game. We've also recently succeeded in observing BF1942's own strategic battlefield decisions while a match is running, which is an important step toward allowing our squads to understand and respond to those decisions.

The longer-term vision includes improved infantry and vehicle behavior, suppression and morale, better radio/communication between bots, improved bot identity and persistence, UI and audio improvements, expanded map/modding tools, and eventually additional maps and content.

This is still very much an active development project, not something ready for release yet. A lot of the work involves understanding systems inside a 24-year-old game for which very little technical documentation still exists. Progress can sometimes be slow, but we've gotten far enough now that some of the core ideas are actually working in Battlefield 1942.

I'm posting it here partly to introduce the project and partly because I'd love to hear from anyone who worked on BF1942 mods in the past. If you have experience with BF1942 AI, StrategicAreas/Strategies, mapping, old MDT tools, BF42++, reverse engineering, or even old documentation and files you've held onto over the years, I'd love to hear from you.

Most importantly, the philosophy behind the project is simple:

Keep Battlefield 1942 Battlefield 1942 — just make its battlefield smarter, deeper, and more alive.

Hello,

I already have a fully functioning map editor, 3D positional proximity voice chat, and an all in one development kit tool for developing new BF1942 mods. My map editor is currently open-source and publicly available on GitHub.
If you would like to use my some of my map editor files in your project, you may do so as long as you give credit.

Best regards

Hi Lucca,

Thank you! I took some time to look through RefractorForge and I'm very impressed with how much you've already built.

There are actually several areas that overlap with where BF1942 AI 2.0 is headed. The biggest one for us right now is your AI pathfinding/search-map work and strategic-map generation. I was recently given an older BF1942 pathfinding tool package and had started researching that workflow, so finding that you've already implemented much of this in a modern open-source editor is extremely useful.

The RFA/.con handling, terrain tools, control point and spawn editing, map validation, minimap generation, and mod dependency handling could also potentially save us a tremendous amount of work when we reach the maps/content side of the project.

We're currently much deeper on the runtime AI side — persistent bot squads, squad leaders/members, strategic AI integration, movement/cohesion behavior, diagnostics, and reverse engineering portions of the game's AI internals. So there may actually be some useful overlap in both directions. I noticed the note that AI pathfinding regeneration still needs more in-game bot validation; that's something our project may eventually be able to help test.

I definitely don't want to duplicate work you've already done, and if we use any of your work directly we'll make sure you're properly credited. I'd also like to make sure we respect how you want the GPL/licensing side handled if we ever integrate code rather than simply using RefractorForge as a development tool.

Thanks again for reaching out and for making this available. I think RefractorForge could be very useful to what we're building, and I'd be happy to stay in touch as both projects develop.

Best regards,
JaY

******ANNOUNCEMENT***** New Mod/Spinoff from BF42 2.0:

Frontline_Roadmap.png

BF1942 Frontline — New Standalone Realism Project

I’ve started working on a new Battlefield 1942 project called BF1942 Frontline.

Frontline began as an idea while developing BF1942 AI 2.0, but the concept became different enough that I decided to develop it separately as its own standalone experimental mod.

The basic idea is simple:

What if a Battlefield 1942 battle actually felt like two armies meeting in the field?

Instead of bots spawning, sprinting toward flags, capturing them, and immediately racing toward the next objective, Frontline is being designed around a much slower battlefield:

Deploy → Advance → Make Contact → Establish the Front → Fight for Ground → Reinforce → Survive

At the beginning of a battle, there is no predefined front line. Infantry from both armies will deploy across a broad portion of the battlefield and advance primarily on foot. When the two forces begin encountering one another, those contacts will determine where the battlefront actually forms. Pasted markdown

The initial version will be infantry-only. Vehicles may be explored later, but right now the goal is to prove the core infantry battlefield experience without tanks, aircraft and other vehicles interfering with the experiment.

Bots won't simply be made permanently slow, either. The goal is for ordinary strategic movement to happen primarily at a walking pace, while allowing BF1942's native AI to run, react, seek cover and fight normally once combat begins. Pasted markdown

Another major difference will be attrition.

For the prototype, every soldier will have an initial life plus a maximum of three respawns. Once those lives are exhausted, that soldier is gone for the rest of the battle. Armies will therefore physically shrink as casualties mount, eventually creating gaps in the line that the opposing force can exploit. Victory ultimately comes from destroying the opposing army rather than simply bleeding ordinary Battlefield tickets. Pasted markdown

Development is being deliberately broken into small milestones:

v.1 — Standalone/Infantry Foundation
v.2 — Walking & Movement
v.3 — Broad Army Deployment
v.4 — Contact Detection & Front Formation
v.5 — Front-Line Combat
v.6 — Lives, Attrition & Victory
v.7 — Map Support & Optimization
v.8 — Polish, Tools & Release

The immediate goal isn't to build an enormous simulation before anyone can play it. It's to get a small Frontline prototype running as soon as reasonably possible, watch two armies actually deploy and meet each other, and find out whether the concept is as fun in BF1942 as it sounds on paper. That prototype-first philosophy is intentional. Pasted markdown

Frontline will remain separate from BF1942 AI 2.0 during development. Some discoveries from AI 2.0—particularly our work intercepting strategic AI movement while retaining BF1942's native pathfinding—may eventually help Frontline, but we're keeping the projects cleanly isolated for now. Pasted markdown

This is still very early development, so everything beyond the core concept is subject to testing and change.

But development has begun.

Two armies. No predefined front. No endless supply of soldiers.

Deploy. Advance. Make contact. Hold the line.

BF1942 Frontline

More to come.
