I have been meaning to make a post about the passing of Piet. He died of prostate cancer.
A year ago, I lost an old buddy to prostate cancer. I didn't know he had been ill. I asked his ex-wife (divorced) what happened. She said prostate cancer. I asked had he not been having annual physicals. Her response "no, he didn't believe in running to the doctors." Dan Fogelberg wrote and sang "Leader of the Band". A very talented musician. He was diagnosed with "advanced prostate cancer" in May, 2004 and died three years later at the age of 56.
Prostate cancer is curable if caught early. If you are 45 or older, get checked. Not being checked is rolling the dice with your life. Do you want to do that? Get checked because if you have a problem, you will get treatment so you won't die of prostate cancer.
Some doctors rely on a blood test called a PSA. This test is a blood test used primarily to screen for prostate cancer. The test measures the amount of prostate-specific antigen (PSA). If you test high, then there would be a need for further testing and examination.
You should also have a digital exam of your prostate by the doctor. My advice is to see a specialist called a "Urologist". The doctor will put on a rubber glove and lube his index finger. You will bend over, pants/underwear down and the doctor will insert his finger in to physically examine your prostate. The doctor will be looking for bumps, lumps and checking to see if anything unusual can be felt. The most deadly of prostate cancers may not be detected by the PSA test. This is why you want the doctor to feel your prostate. Is it fun? No. But it only lasts a few seconds and you are done.
You do not have to die because of prostate cancer. Don't be afraid, get checked. I go every year for a check.
RIP Pie
